Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

According to CBS in Denver, around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 13th, a young boy was injured and taken to the hospital after a hit and run accident at the intersection of Federal and Evans in Denver, Colorado. Eye witnesses said that the elderly driver was trying to get through the intersection before the light turned red, when he struck the boy and continued on driving. Traffic was diverted in the area for about an hour while police investigated the situation, and the hit and run driver was later arrested around 5:00 p.m.

Hit and run accidents in Denver and throughout the State of Colorado can be tragic–especially to pedestrians. According to the NHTSA, in 2009 alone, over 4,000 pedestrians were killed and it was estimated that 59,000 were injured due to traffic crashes in the United States. Hit and run accidents occur for many reasons, including:

  • Driving Intoxicated
  • Fear
  • Driving with a suspended license
  • To avoid arrest
  • Speeding or Reckless driving
  • And more

No matter what the reason is for a hit and run accident, according to Colorado law, it is a crime. All drivers are required to stay at the scene of an accident and lend aid while waiting for the authorities.

A Colorado Springs man is in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle. 7News is reporting that the man was found lying unconscious on South Circle Drive at Monterey Road Saturday night. Police say the man was riding his bicycle when he was struck by an unknown vehicle. The vehicle drove off after the accident. The man is being treated for a life-threatening brain injury according to police.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, a traumatic brain injury is defined as “A blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the function of the brain”. A recent study shows that roughly 1.1 million Americans will be treated in an emergency room for a brain injury. Assaults are the fourth leading cause of brain injuries in the United States. The CDC estimates that 5.3 million Americans currently long-term or life-long needs as the result of a traumatic brain injury.

As we move through our lives we expect those around us to act in a responsible manner. But from time to time the people and businesses we come in contact with make mistakes or take dangerous situations for granted. When that happens we may be left with injuries or damages through no fault of our own. A personal injury case is a case that stems from the negligence of another. It may be an auto accident case. It might be the result of a slip and fall on ice or a busted-up walkway. It may be from a dog bite or an injury from a defective building or product. Whatever the case might be, when another person’s negligence causes us harm we could be legally entitled to recover for our damages. If you are concerned that you have suffered an unnecessary injury or impairment due to the negligence of another, contact Denver personal injury lawyer William P. Godsman today. Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

A bicyclist was seriously injured on Sunday in Fort Collins. According to the Coloradoan, a 48-year-old man was struck by a car in the intersection of Drake Road and Redwing Road. The bicyclist was transported to the hospital where he remains in serious condition. The driver of the car, identified as Justin Holbrook, allegedly fled the scene and went to his home nearby. Police arrested Holbrook at his home where they found his car being towed. Reports indicate that Holbrook told the tow-truck driver he had hit a deer. Holbrook is facing possible felony charges of hit-and-run accident resulting in serious bodily injury and driving under restraint.

As fuel costs rise, more and more people are turning to alternative modes of transportation including bicycles. However, with traffic counts mounting, our roads are becoming more congested resulting in more auto-bicycle accidents and fatalities. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 716 cyclists were killed and 52,000 injured in traffic crashes in 2008 in the U.S.

As we move through our lives we expect those around us to act in a responsible manner. But from time to time the people we come in contact with make mistakes or take dangerous situations for granted.
